This album was originally proposed by Hal McGee of haltapes.com, that Walls of Genius would take on the material from Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music, originally released in 1952. Smith's anthology was a collection of folk songs culled from vintage 78-rpm recordings and was highly influential in the folk music boom of the late 50's and early 60's. Walls of Genius accepted the challenge! Tracks 2-7 were recorded at one session on 6-21-2015 with some overdubs and mixing afterward. Track 1 was recorded a few weeks earlier and includes an excerpt from Ricardo D'Orlando and Captain Mission's "Cerebral Crosstalk" from their cassette release "The Electric Brains" (courtesy of Haltapes.com). Track 8 ("Dynamite Joe") was recorded a few days later, all at the New Hall of Genius in Boulder, Colorado.
