about

This track was recorded with my chin resting upon an un-amplified electric guitar (1961 Gibson SG) and a microphone placed beside my open mouth. Thus, not only do you hear what the mouth cavity amplified, but you also hear some breathing sounds. I had been doing a lot of reading about western Native Americans at the time, hence my interest in the Ute, who were once the dominant tribe in the Colorado high-country. The "Ain't it Lonesome out tonight" music comes from some old western movie. I don't remember if I taped it from television or if it was a happy accident, something that was already on the reel tape before we recorded over it. We certainly took advantage of both those methods of incorporating pre-recorded material. This was facilitated by the fact that I had inherited a whole box of used reel tapes from Mikal Bellan (of Rumours Of Marriage, my previous band) and since fresh tape was expensive, this gave us the opportunity to always have the tape rolling, albeit of less audio quality than a fresh tape would have been. This track was previously released on the 1983 cassette "Little Victor Meets Violent Vince" and was credited to my alter ego "Joe Colorado", although technically it's not really what the nom-de-plume Joe Colorado represented. At this point in time, we weren't calling "solo material" Walls Of Genius yet.

Walls Of Genius

Fried psychedelia, relentless experimentation, hunter-gatherer improv, space rock doom, heavy rock monumentalism and daffy cover tunes. Walls of Genius rips holes in the fabric of space and time, kicks you in the ass and leaves you smiling. 80s stalwarts of the cassette culture, they're back in the 21st century. The most unique band that ever was. Really! ... more
