about

Originally released on the 1983 Walls of Genius cassette "Cultural Sabotage" and credited to the group 'You Can Digest A Rock'. YCDAR consisted of Ed Fowler (guitar), Evan Cantor (bass, guitar, vocals, percussion), Little Fyodor (Vocals and Percussion). Special effects were "courtesy of Ed". Original liner notes indicates (in caps): "THIS IS A NO OVERDUBS TAPE. WHAT YOU HEAR WAS PERFORMED ENTIRELY BY THE GROUPS WITH NO, ABSOLUTELY NO, OVERDUBS". Also noted: "Walls of Genius is an equal opportunity vandal. We destroy songs we like, as well as songs we don't like. We just don't care." Well, obviously, we cared!

I find it amazing in retrospect that we could have played along with a movie on television that wasn't interrupted by commercials, even in the dark ages of 1983. It's possible that we recorded the movie off tv and edited out the commercials and then played along with the recording. Ed and I (Evan) had previously done a similar thing with the movie "Key Largo", a Humphrey Bogart-Edward G. Robinson movie and whatever our process had been, we recreated it for this jam. "Mars Needs Women" is a ridiculous 1967 sci-flick about Martians losing fertility and needing to steal earthwomen in order to reproduce. It's a strong entry in the pantheon of films that are "so bad they're good". Not as bad as "Plan 9 From Outer Space", despite the ridiculous premise.

about

Walls Of Genius

Fried psychedelia, relentless experimentation, hunter-gatherer improv, space rock doom, heavy rock monumentalism and daffy cover tunes. Walls of Genius rips holes in the fabric of space and time, kicks you in the ass and leaves you smiling. 80s stalwarts of the cassette culture, they're back in the 21st century. The most unique band that ever was. Really! ... more
